Women through the Lens is a mentorship program conceived to emancipate and educate women from disadvantaged communities in Nigeria, through the creative medium of photography. A group of women are mentored through an analytical photography education framework delivered by an intercultural and international team of female professionals working in the wider photographic field. Our aim is to give young African women the agency to build alternative career paths in photography, conveying new stories about women, from female perspectives. In addition, ‘Women through the Lens’ effects a revised perception of the role and value of women in our patriarchal society, generating new dialogues on the advancement of gender equality in Nigeria and the wider African continent.
The project is developed by the African Artists’ Foundation in partnership with FastForward/Women in Photography, LEAP Africa and Dare2Dream, four Nigeria based organizations that join forces in this project to improve women’s situation in this country.
